What is a noun?
A noun is a naming word which gives a name to
- a person
- a thing
- a place
- an animal
Nouns can be put into several categories. but leaving it for the future study, let's look at the formation of plural nouns from singular.
How the Plurals are formed.
1. The general rule of forming the plural is to add (simple) "s" to the end of the singular.
singular | plural |
teacher | teachers |
chair | chairs |
temple | temples |
book | books |
student | students |
2.If the singular ends in sh,ch,s,o,x, you should add "es" to the end of the noun.
singular | plural |
bush | bushes |
dish | dishes |
branch | branches |
bus | buses |
hero | heroes |
3.but the following words ending in "o" are exceptions to this rule.

bamboo | bamboos |
dynamo | dynamos |
kilo | kilos |
piano | pianos |
video | videos |
4.If the singular noun ends in "y" and "y" is preceded by a consonant, change "y" into "i" and add "es".
